Malaysian Open 2022 results: Gregoria Mariska’s footsteps stop in second half

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian women’s singles athlete, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, had to recognize the superiority of the Chinese representative, Wang Zhi Yi, in the second round of the 2022 Malaysia Open. Competing on the fourth court of Axiata Arena, in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday June 30, 2022, Gregoria lost the match in two straight matches with a score of 21-19 and 21-13.

Gregoria started the game with aggressive play. As a result, he managed to get the first point. Even though the points were tight, he managed to lead 8-4. However, some of his own mistakes and Wang Zhi Yi’s attacks often caused Gregoria to die. The Chinese representative also took the lead at 11-9 in the first interval of play.

After a break, Gregoria’s appearance was oversized. Despite several points from Wang Zhi Yi’s comeback, he failed to turn the tide. The first match ended 21-19 with the victory of the Chinese athlete world number 13.

In the second game, Gregoria failed to display his aggressive game. He often makes his own mistakes. The shuttle return was often wide and the game in front of the net did not allow Wang Zhi Yi to easily get points. The Chinese player managed to lead 11-6 in the second interval of play.

The big point difference made Wang Zhi Yi’s game quite comfortable. He managed to take advantage of the appearance of Gregoria who often failed to turn the steering wheel accurately. Wang Zhi Yi’s placement of the ball in front of the net resulted in the second game ending 21-13.

This loss prevented Gregoria from continuing his surprise at the Malaysian Open 2022. In the first round, he was able to defeat the Japanese first seed Akane Yamaguchi. Moreover, this result also made him fail to repeat the victory over Wang Zhi Yi in a duel at the World Junior Championships in 2017.
