Former Indian opener wants player impact rule to disappear in IPL; The reason – it’s versatile

The impact player rule has been introduced in IPL 2023, allowing teams to strategize effectively. However, the former Indian star found it disturbing

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has claimed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) should remove the Impact Player rule before IPL 2024. In an article on X, Jaffer opined that the rule does not encourage players all-rounders to play frequently and is a worrying sign for Indian cricket.

The Player Impact rule introduced in IPL 2023 allows teams to strategize effectively by ensuring that they can field players of their choice at any point in the match. Wasim Jaffer lamented that lack of all-rounders and batsmen not bowling much has become a major concern for Indian cricket.

Impact Player rules have been clarified

As per the IPL Manual, a team may call upon an Impact player to replace another player initially named in the Playing XI. However, the replaced player can no longer participate in the match. In addition, Impact players can only be Indian, unless the team fields fewer than four foreign players on the day of the match.

  • Teams must announce five substitutes in addition to the eleven players before the start of the match.
  • Teams can enter an impact player before the start of the innings, after the fall of a wicket or after its end.
  • Impact Player can be used in case of injury. However, the injured player can no longer participate in the match.
  • A substitute player can hit and bowl anywhere, regardless of the player he is replacing.
  • However, the Player Impact rule does not apply to matches reduced to 10 overs or less.
