“I am pleased to announce that we will expand our AI and cloud infrastructure in Spain by $2.1 billion over the next two years,” Smith wrote on X.
“Our investment goes beyond just building data centers. It is a testament to our 37-year commitment to Spain, its security and the development and digital transformation of its government, companies and people,” he added.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reposted Brad's tweet and said the company will continue to work with countries to advance the development of responsible AI.
“Today we announced our plans to expand our investments in Spain as we continue to work together to promote responsible AI in the public and private sectors,” he said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain, said that “Microsoft's investment in Spain will be quadrupled and will reach 1,950 million euros.”
Microsoft's investment in Germany
The announcement came after the company announced a $3.45 billion investment in Germany focused on AI. As in Spain, Microsoft's investment in Germany will extend over two years and will facilitate the expansion of its cloud region.
Expand
According to the company, the investment would make Microsoft's cloud computing and AI capabilities more accessible to small and large businesses, including the ability to develop and apply AI models. The data centers are reportedly powered entirely by renewable energy.
Smith previously said that Microsoft wants to double the capacity of its AI and data center infrastructure in the country and expand its training programs in the company's largest investment in Germany in the last 40 years.
