Animal rescuers in Gujarat say thousands of birds are falling from the sky during a scorching heatwave, as Indian schools start classes early to avoid the midday heat.
Doctors at a veterinary hospital in Ahmedabad city were seen feeding dozens of birds, giving them multivitamin tablets, on Wednesday (11/5). Some birds get water injected into their mouths due to dehydration.
“This year is one of the worst in recent times. We have seen a ten percent increase in the number of birds that need to be rescued,” said Manoj Bhaskar, a rescue representative.
India has experienced a series of record heatwaves this year. Indian experts link the heatwave phenomenon to the impact of climate change, cited in Telegraph.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, March was the hottest month on record since records began. Meanwhile, northwest and central India have also experienced a heatwave since early April.
A number of parts of India have been enveloped by hot temperatures, such as in New Delhi, where temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius last Thursday and then rose until Sunday.
The government has asked schools to start their activities earlier in the morning to avoid the impact of this heatwave.
“Times may be from 7 a.m. The number of class hours per day may be reduced. Sports and other outdoor activities that directly expose students to sunlight may be adjusted accordingly in the morning,” said the Indian Ministry of Education.
In addition to birds, veterinarians also administered intravenous drips to cats dehydrated from the heatwave at the Jivdaya Charitable Trust rehabilitation center in Ahmedabad, India.
Health officials in Gujarat have issued an advisory to hospitals to set up special wards for heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses due to rising temperatures, cited. Al Jazeera.
