China has announced that it will provide consular protection and assistance to the arrested employees of Chinese smartphone maker Vivo in India. The company expressed its firm support for Chinese companies in protecting their legitimate rights and interests.

In response to the arrest of some Vivo officials, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said in a press conference that China is closely following the matter. “The Chinese Embassy and Consulates in India will continue to provide consular protection and assistance to the affected individuals in accordance with the law,” she said.

“The Chinese government strongly supports Chinese companies in safeguarding their legitimate rights and interests. We hope that India fully recognizes the mutually beneficial nature of business cooperation between our two countries and creates a fair, equitable, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment,” she said.

The federal agency had previously made four arrests in the case, including the managing director of mobile phone company Lava International, Hari Om Rai, Chinese citizen Guangwen alias Andrew Kuang, and auditors Nitin Garg and Rajan Malik. They are currently in judicial custody.
