Bengaluru – Despite being India's Silicon Valley, the Bangalore region remains a dangerous place for journalists. A journalist who criticized the Hindu right has been shot dead by a mysterious person.
Reported by AFP, Wednesday (6/9/2017), the journalist's name was Gauri Lankesh. He was shot dead in Karnataka, Bangalore IT hub on Tuesday (9/5) local time.
“I am shocked to understand the murder of renowned journalist Gauri Lankesh. I am at a loss for words to condemn this heinous crime,” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Twitter on Tuesday.
Lankesh is a tabloid editor, known for his criticism of right-wing Hindu nationalist political groups. The Press Trust of India (PTI) said Lankesh opened the front door of his residence. That's when the deadly fire was caused by “motorized attackers” in the capital Bangalore.
The report said Lankesh died on the spot after two bullets hit his chest and another his forehead. “I spoke to the Director General of Police and told him to ensure that a speedy and thorough investigation is carried out to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Siddaramaiah said.
This region of southern India is relatively developed, but several killings of political activists and academics have taken place in recent times. In 2015, India was considered the deadliest place in Asia for journalists. This is the assessment of Reporters Without Borders, an agency based in Paris.
