Badminton News: Reigning champions India will easily enter the Commonwealth Games badminton knockout stage as they drew against Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Group 1 of the competition by mixed teams.
Badminton competition at the quadrennial event to be held in Birmingham from July 29 to August 8 consists of mixed team events followed by individual events. The mixed team final will take place on August 2.
A total of 16 teams will take part in the mixed team event, and they have been split into four groups, with the top two nations advancing to the round of 16.
The draw took place in Birmingham in March. But Nigeria withdrew in early May, with Zambia now confirming their successor.
Five-time champions Malaysia, beaten by India in the final of the last edition on the Gold Coast, are in Group 4 with South Africa, Jamaica and Zambia.
England, winners of the first eight editions of the team event, from 1966, are in Group 2 with Singapore, Mauritius and Barbados, while Group 3 includes Pan Am power Canada, alongside the Scotland, the Maldives and also Uganda.
Each encounter in the team event consists of best-of-five matches with men’s and women’s singles and triples, men’s, women’s and mixed doubles, which will test the strength of the team as a whole.
“Commonwealth has a unique feel. While it features some of badminton’s traditional strengths, there are also teams with newer badminton traditions, and as such there is an incredible diversity of styles and approaches. of this competition,” said BWF President Poul. – Erik Hoyer.
