In India and Bangladesh, floods and violent storms have killed many people and forced millions more to flee their homes. Authorities expect the situation to deteriorate over the weekend.
Severe storms and floods claimed many lives in India and Bangladesh. Millions of homes were under water in both countries, authorities said.
According to the Ministry of Disaster Management, at least nine people have died in the floods in the Indian state of Assam, and two million have had to flee their homes. The Brahmaputra, one of the largest rivers in Asia, broke through its dykes and flooded 3,000 villages and crops. “The amount of rainfall is unprecedented,” said a worker at the weather station in Assam’s capital Gauhati. The military helped authorities rescue stranded people and provide food for the homeless.
