Delhi Water Minister Atishi on Tuesday sharply criticized the Haryana government, claiming it was deliberately and illegally disrupting the capital's water supply.
Addressing a press conference here, Atishi alleged that the Haryana government is releasing less water to the city due to which Delhi is unable to meet its daily water needs.
Quoting an affidavit filed by the Haryana government in the Supreme Court, the minister said, “The Haryana government lied when it claimed that it had released sufficient water to Delhi. Its affidavit in the Supreme Court contains data about actual water release which has exposed its lie.”
According to the affidavit, the Haryana government had reduced the amount of water released from May 23 ahead of the Delhi elections, she claimed.
Delhi went to polls on May 25, before which the Haryana government restricted water supply to the city for four days, according to her own affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, she said.
The minister also said that she would write a letter to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in this regard and would also approach the Supreme Court to submit the data from the affidavit.
Atishi said Delhi was short of 40 to 45 million gallons of water per day due to disrupted water supply from Haryana.
The Delhi government's rapid response team has been tasked with checking water supply systems in Delhi for leaks, she added.
