A tourist bus carrying Hindu pilgrims has crashed into a ravine in northern India, killing at least 22 people. Seven other passengers were seriously injured in the crash in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand on Sunday, police said. According to reports, rescuers were still looking for another person. A total of 30 people were on the bus. In the evening, Indian media reported that 28 passengers had been killed.
The police initially gave no information about the exact circumstances of the accident and the possible cause. Pilgrims were heading to the remote pilgrimage site of Yamunotri. The accident happened about 160 kilometers from Dehradun, the state capital of Uttarakhand.
The state is home to some of the holiest sites in Hinduism. These are visited by millions of pilgrims every year. However, the roads in the Himalayas are often in poor condition.
