Badminton News: Two Indian teenagers playing their first major event produced YONEX All England's biggest story yet by stunning second seeds Lee Sohee and Shin Seungchan in the quarter-finals of All England 2022.
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela, who only started playing on the HSBC BWF World Tour this year and made their Super 1000 debut at the All England, were not intimidated by the reputation of their accomplished rivals and initiated a counterattack play that eliminated the second seed.
Quite impressive for a pair unaccustomed to this level, Jolly and Pullela absorbed everything Lee and Shin threw at them, before pushing back. Two match points were saved in the second game, the momentum determined the victory of the Indian team.
“I don’t know what to say, it’s unreal. I have goosebumps,” said Gayatri, whose father Gopichand was the 2001 English champion.
“We only give the best of ourselves. In the second set we were down 18-20, we just thought we had to fight, just one point at a time.
“I didn't think we would get entry tickets to the event. When we received registrations, we were happy to be able to play with the best players in the world and I was really excited. The semi-finals are now and I am very happy. I am so grateful.
Jolly, who played an exceptional game with his pace and attack, said they needed time to adapt to the Korean game and could gradually assert themselves.
“Their control and speed are very good. After the first game, we felt comfortable with their attack and speed, and we started to attack as well. We held the shuttle and defended the attack.
