Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy’s advice on the “70-hour week” has now gone beyond the purview of India’s workforce sector and is now being mentioned in governance, where three Lok Sabha MPs asked about it on the first day of the winter session of Parliament the Narendra Modi government whether to consider the Infosys co-founder’s proposal.

Narayana Murthy’s 70-hour workweek had sparked debates and drawn brickbats and flowers, with several business owners agreeing on the need to increase productivity and some debating adequate remuneration.

Narayana Murthy had said in an interview with former Infosys chief financial officer Mohandas Pai that India’s workforce needs to improve its productivity to compete with countries like Japan and China.

“India’s labor productivity is one of the lowest in the world. If we do not improve our labor productivity, we will not be able to compete with the countries that have made tremendous progress. Therefore, my request is that our youth must say, “This is my country.” “I would like to work 70 hours a week,” Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy had said.

According to a Hindustan Times In a report, Congress MP Komati Venkata Reddy, Manne Srinivas Reddy of Bharat Rashtra Samithi and Kanumuru Raghu Rama Krishna Raju of YSR Congress Party in a question to the Ministry of Labor and Employment yesterday asked: “Will the Minister of Labor and Employment be happy to do so.” “State: Whether the government will assess Infosys co-founder’s 70-hour work proposal?”

The three politicians further said: “…if so, what details and the government’s position in this regard compared to the working hours abroad set out in the International and Fundamental Principles?”

Rameswar Teli, the Minister of State for Labor and Employment, responded: “The Government of India is not currently considering such a proposal.” HT Report added.

Narayana Murthy had said that unless India’s youth make an effort to work more hours, the country will have no difficulty catching up with the economies that have made remarkable progress in the last few decades.

Narayana Murthy’s statement found several supporters, including Congressman Manish Tiwari. “If India is to truly become a great power, one or even two generations must make 70 hours a week their work ethic. 70 hours a week with one day off and 15 days vacation in a year must become the norm,” former Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari said.

Earlier, JSW chairman Sajjan Jindal had also supported Narayana Murthy’s comments. “I fully support Narayana Murthy’s statement. It’s not about burnout, it’s about dedication. “We must make India an economic superpower in 2047 that we can all be proud of,” Jindal had said.

Agreeing with Narayana Murthy, Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal said, “I completely agree with Narayana Murthy’s views. It is not our time to work less and entertain ourselves. Rather, it is up to us to give everything and build in one generation what other countries have built over many generations!”
