Badminton News: Excitement shrouds West Odisha following the announcement of the Padma Shri award for para-badminton player, Pramod Bhagat from Attabira in Bargarh district.
Previously, Pramod Bhagat received the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award in 2021 and the Arjuna award in 2019. Bhagat also won a gold medal in men’s singles badminton SL3 at the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2021.
Badminton 33-year-old Pramod, who has had poliomyelitis since the age of four, is currently in Spain training.
When contacted, Pramod said: I am very happy to know that I have been nominated for the prestigious Padma Shri award. 2021 has been an amazing year for me and at the start of 2022 I was nominated for Padma Shri. It is a great honor for me. It will motivate and inspire me and players like me,” he said.
Pramod competed in state-level outdoor games when he was 10 years old. With several friends from the village, he also participated in many tournaments. Despite differing abilities, he performed exceptionally in the tournament.
Pramod’s father, Kailash Bhagat, was a driver at a rice mill in Attabira. The financial situation of the family is very fragile. However, financial conditions did not prevent Pramod from realizing his dream.
“Bhagat made Attabira and all of Odihsa proud. Even though he fought for the money, he was not disappointed. The whole district of Bargarh celebrates Bhagat’s great achievement,” Rabbi Panda said, sports organizer and resident of Attabira.
