BFirefighters said at least 27 people died Friday in a major fire in New Delhi, the Indian capital. “The fire has been extinguished (…), the search operation is still in progress”, indicated a representative of the firefighters of the AFP press agency.
According to the media, more than 40 people were burned and had to be hospitalized. On Friday, Indian President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his condolences via Twitter.
The fire broke out in the afternoon in a four-storey commercial building located in the west of the metropolis. Devastating fires are more common in India due to poor building practices and a lack of safety compliance.
