Unfortunately, Zhang Beiwen suffered an injury after the match and shared an update on his personal Instagram on Saturday (8/7).
“I’ve decided to retire, but don’t worry, I’ll be back! Unfortunately, I injured my right Achilles tendon in my first game and it got worse after every game I played. , luckily it wasn’t as bad as when I tore my left,” Zhang said.
Zhang Beiwen also revealed that his injury this time means he won’t have much time to recover at the US Open home tournament next week.
“Even after I made it worse I kept playing so I had to adjust my style of play and unfortunately I had a stomach cramp. I finished my last game but I I had to withdraw from the Canada Open and the worst thing is that I won’t be able to attend my home tournament; the US Open next week.”
“I appreciate everyone who contacted me and I apologize to all the fans who cheered me on. I promise to get back on the pitch as soon as possible,” he added.
With this, Thailand’s former world champion R Atchanok Intanon secured a ticket to the 2023 Canada Open final.
