Badminton News: India’s rising young badminton player Malvika Bansod has made her first year on the World Tour even more memorable this season which continues to significantly boost her Badminton World Federation (BWF) ranking.
Just 300 days after starting the year with a career ranking of 67th, Malvika Bansod achieved a career-best ranking of 32nd among women’s singles players in the world.
The icing on the cake for Malvika is a place above her idol Saina Nehwal, former world No. 1. Nagpur’s daughter beat him in the quarter-finals of the India Open Super 500 tournament in January. While Saina is ranked 33rd, Malvika, 32nd, is now India’s best after world No. 6 and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu.
In the ranking published Tuesday by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Malvika climbed two places from 34th to 32nd with a total of 37,310 points. While Saina remained stagnant in 33rd place after a poor finish in her last tournament at the Hylo Open in Germany, Malvika’s quarter-final at the same event in November helped her to 3,850 points.
Over the next five weeks, Saina dropped 2,606 points to take her total to 36,920 and help Malvika finish the year slightly above her with just 390 points.
In the men’s doubles sector, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy / Chirag Shetty are the highest ranked pair at 5th in the world.
