Emergency meeting of the UN General Assembly on Monday following the annexation of four Ukrainian territories
The UN General Assembly will meet again, urgently, on Monday, October 10, starting at 3 pm (9 pm in Paris), at the request of Ukraine and Albania, to discuss the situation in Ukraine, said Paulina Kubiak, her spokeswoman.
During this scheduled session with no end date, the General Assembly, which brings together the 193 UN member states, will have to examine the resolution currently being prepared on the annexation of Ukraine, following Russia’s veto during a Security Council meeting on this matter. problem.
Last Friday, Russia surprisingly blocked the adoption of a Security Council resolution condemning its annexation of four Ukrainian territories. In addition to Russia’s veto, four countries abstained (China, India, Brazil and Gabon).
The draft resolution, prepared by the United States and Albania, calls on all other countries and organizations “to disown pseudo annexation” of the four regions and demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops “immediately, completely and unconditionally”. America had, even before the vote, promised that if Russia exercised its veto, the subject would go to the General Assembly, where each country has one vote, without a veto.
A new draft text is thus being drafted by the European Union, in collaboration with Ukraine and other countries, one of the diplomatic sources said. A vote on this future resolution will allow for a more precise assessment of Russia’s isolation level, while some developing countries are upset that the West is focusing all its attention on Ukraine.
In the spring, the General Assembly passed three resolutions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; the third, at the end of April, showed the erosion of international unity vis–vis Moscow.
