Wipro is the first Indian IT services company to allow workers’ unions in Europe, according to a report by TOI. At the request of the employees, the company agreed in 2019 to set up a European Works Council (EWC). The agreement allows employees to engage in discussions and debates on issues that affect them. The EWC agreement was negotiated with employee representatives from 13 countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, France, Sweden and Finland.
Wipro reportedly has over 30,000 employees in Europe and counts Metro, Telefonica Deutschland and ABB among its top customers.
“The main purpose of the EWC is to build an inclusive and sustainable working relationship with employee representatives from all countries, to exchange and discuss matters of transnational interest and to gain the voice of the people. This is a progressive agreement that preserves the best of Europe’s standards and ways of working,” Wipro told TOI.
The first meeting of the panel will take place in 2024. The report added that the EWC would elect its chair and select committee members at the meeting. In addition, Wipro employees are consulted on the progress of the business.
Wipro also informed TOI that the EWC will be governed by elected or appointed EU (European Union) and EEA (European Economic Area) employee representatives in line with existing national law and practice.
As per previous reports, in September Wipro incurred restructuring costs of INR 136 crore to address inefficiencies in Europe.
