Badminton News: The Badminton Association of India (BAI) on Monday announced cash prizes of Rs 5 lakh each, for Sankar Muthusamy and men’s doubles duo Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty for their best performances at the World Junior Championships and Roland -Garros 2022.
Former World Junior No. 1 Sankar on Sunday became the second Indian men’s badminton player to win a silver medal at the World Junior Championships after losing the final to Kuo kuan Lin of Chinese Taipei in Spain.
Satwik and Chirag, meanwhile, captured the French Open Super 750 crown with back-to-back victories over Chinese Taipei’s Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han in the final in Paris.
“It is a proud moment for all of us to see junior and senior badminton players securing a podium by beating top players and becoming standard bearers of pride and glory,” the BAI President said. , Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a statement.
On their way to the title chase in Paris, Satwik and Chirag became the first Indian doubles pair to win the BWF Super 750 tournament. Both also managed to beat world number 1 Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi in the quarter-finals .
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Sankar has become the ninth Indian badminton player to win a medal at the first junior championship.
“Kids last week played badminton without any fear and we are very happy to see India finish among the top countries in such a global event. It will also be a great inspiration for the younger generation,” said the BAI Secretary, Sanjay Mishra.
Satwik and Chirag had a dream come true this year, winning the Indian Open title, followed by historic Thomas Cup and Commonwealth Games victories and winning a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships.
