Badminton News: After overcoming the pressure of expectations to win gold in badminton men’s singles at the Commonwealth Games, Lakshya Sen is set to turn 21 next Tuesday before heading to the World Championships in Tokyo ( August 22-28).
The Almora-born player, who trained at Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, was once again warmly welcomed by trainees and staff led by Prakash Padukone as well as PPBA U manager and head coach Vimal Kumar.
Speaking to reporters at the Padukone-Dravid Center for Sports Excellence, Lakshya Sen said the six-week break he took from skipping tournaments in Malaysia and Singapore helped him do well at the Birmingham Games.
“It’s my first Commonwealth Games experience, and it feels good to do well. The rest I gave myself away from tournaments before the CWG helped me do well. not too driven to think about the results. I went to Birmingham with an open mind but seeing the draw I was convinced that if I did well I could win this tournament. When I missed the tournaments in Malaysia and Singapore, I knew I wouldn’t win. I didn’t play for six weeks. Finally, the team event match helped me do well in the second half of the CWG,” Sen said. .
The Indian youngster said the final, in which he struggled to beat Malaysian Ng Tze Yong in three games, including a 42-shot rally in the deciding game, was exhausting.
“All the matches are difficult, but the final is more of a pressure match. There are also physically demanding matches in the team matches. It’s very exhausting to come back to the final after losing the first match and mentally the final is a tiring match. The hardest one,” said Sen, who expects a brief respite after the Japan Open which ends in the first week of September.
“Since the first game is so close, I believe that it is not a difficult task to win the second and third games if I continue to play the same way. Even when I fell behind at the start in the second game I didn’t panic because I knew I was playing well. I kept the shuttle in play and I could see that he wasn’t able to maintain the same pace in the second and third sets. Also, he faced two tough games leading up to the final. and I only have one. For the final, I was much fresher on the court. I can stretch it and enjoy because he played extra matches,” he added, which also helped India win mixed team silver.
Lakshya Sen said it was the team’s decision to face Kidambi Srikanth in the final.
“I’m not disappointed to miss the team final. Srikanth bhaiyya beat Yong twice. I played the previous two matches in quarters and semis, I think it’s the team’s decision because they feel they want someone fresh on the pitch for the end game,” he said.
“We have a strong team and it takes a lot of pressure from you. The team is motivated and we had fun. The team helps to keep the pressure on. Even if you don’t do well, you come back and support the team” . I’m still learning a lot, in terms of play and fitness. The main goal is to maintain a level of fitness and then maintain it in consecutive tournaments. What is also important is to find time to rest so that you are refreshed for the next tournament,” added Lakshya Sen.
