KOMPAS.com – Goals from Narayanan Sivasakthi and Alan Costa brought in Belanguru FC won 2-1 against Mumbai City FC in the final Durand Cup 2022Sunday (18/9/2022).

Belanguru FC made history by winning the title for the seventh time in the Durand Cup.

The Durand Cup is the most prestigious competition in India, if not on the Asian continent. Because, the annual tournament is the oldest in Asia.

The Durand Cup has been running since around 1888 or has held 131 editions.

However, the 2022 Durand Cup feels tarnished by the actions of officials or politicians who also hand out awards.

Usually the officials or politicians will present the trophy to the captain of the winning team, in this case Belanguru FC is represented by Sunil Chhetri.

The 2022 Durand Cup trophy was awarded to both Sunil Chhetri and Belanguru FC, but Indian politician don’t want to waste the moment when taking pictures together.

Politicians taking pictures with champions is nothing new, but ‘pushing’ Sunil Chhetri when they take pictures together gives a different impression.

“Congratulations to Governor of West Bengal, La Ganesan for winning the 2022 Durand Cup,” joked YouTuber Anshul Saxena on his personal Twitter account.

In Anshul Saxena’s upload, he went down to upload a video showing La Ganesan pushing Sunil Chhetri.

“Congratulations to West Bengal Youth and Sports Minister Aroop Biswas for winning the 2022 Durand Cup,” Anshul Saxena wrote.

The second upload has also been added with a video showing Aroop Biswas moving Belanguru FC players.

The video then went viral and became a hot cat for netizens around the world, including in Indonesia.

The Durand Cup gives 3 trophies

The particularity of the Durand Cup, in addition to being the oldest in Asia, is also the number of trophies awarded.

Three trophies are awarded to the winner of the Durand Cup, namely the President’s Trophy, the Shimla Trophy and the Durand Cup.

The presidential trophy is a hereditary gift from India’s first precedent, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

While the Shimla Trophy was awarded by the inhabitants of Shimla, the place where the Durand Cup final took place.
