Badminton News: Viktor Axelsen, world number 1 in men’s singles from Denmark, Akane Yamaguchi, world number 1 in women’s singles from Japan, and Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong, world number 3 in mixed doubles, from China, were respectively named men’s player, player Women’s and Pair of the Year 2022 by Badminton World Federation (BWF) in Bangkok on Monday.
If he manages to get on the championship podium again, then it will be the fourth title for Danish badminton player Viktor Axelsen at the BWF World Tour Finals after the 2016, 2017, 2021 editions.
World No. 3 men’s doubles duo Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia won the Most Improved Player of the Year award, while Japan’s Kodai Naraoka, 21, scooped the Most Promising Player trophy of the year.
Speaking to the media after the awards ceremony, Axelsen, who also received the 2021 Men’s Player of the Year award, said he was honored to have won the award and would focus on this week’s finals.
Meanwhile, Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong, who won 8 titles in 2022 and with a win rate of 96%, are very excited to receive the award.
“It is an immense privilege to receive this award. The opponents for the BWF World Tour Finals are very strong and we will try to do our best,” Zheng/Huang said after the awards ceremony.
In para-badminton, WH2 Men’s Paralympic Singles Champion – Daiki Kajiwara of Japan was named Men’s Para-Badminton Player of the Year while India’s 17-year-old World Para-Badminton Champion in the SU5 category, Manisha
Ramadass, won the award for Women’s Para-Badminton Player of the Year. Thomas Wandschneider/Rick Cornell Hellmann from Germany were named the para-badminton pair of the year.
