UK ready to help ASEAN’s green transition

This commitment aims to strengthen the UK’s relationship with ASEAN.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON – The UK will play a bigger role with South East Asia, particularly in helping with the green energy transition. The pledge aims to strengthen Britain’s relationship with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The British High Commissioner to Singapore, Kara Owen, also noted on Tuesday (13/12/2022) that relations between the UK and ASEAN was supported by commercial and economic elements. This is supported by partnerships in the development of capital markets and financial services.

“South East Asia is a great example of what the UK wants to do in this part of the world. We have very strong relationships with each of the South East Asian countries, as well as with the ‘ASEAN as an institution,” Owen said. Asian news channelTuesday.

“We also have a very strong political relationship with ASEAN and collaboration on defense,” he added.

A green economy cooperation framework currently being negotiated between Singapore and the UK will likely focus on three areas of cooperation. “We were both very clear that hydrogen was going to be part of our future energy mix. So what can we do together to innovate, deliver the technology and be able to apply it in a way who helps us? he said.

Noting that ASEAN is very interested in creating its own energy network, Owen said Britain could share its expertise as it has a long history in Europe in this area.

Owen spoke to CNA’s Asia First in an exclusive interview, following UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly’s first major speech on the future of the country’s foreign policy. In his speech, Cleverly noted that post-Brexit Britain needs to work with non-traditional partners such as countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa.

He said Britain would demonstrate its long-term commitment to the Indo-Pacific, among other things, by joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). He also spoke about efforts to strike a free trade agreement with India, the new G20 chair, and said Britain would help India as the new ASEAN chair in its green transition. .
