Three traditional Balinese sports will appear in the G20 chair/presidency

Denpasar (ANTARA) – The President of the Association for the Conservation of Indonesian Traditional Sports (Portina) in Bali Province, Ida Ayu Ketut Karyani, has proposed three types of traditional sports to be featured during the G20 presidency/presidency.

“This is the first step, the Secretary General of the National Portina has contacted us to help host the G20 Presidency event by displaying traditional sports,” he said in Denpasar on Saturday.

Under the guidance of National Portina General Secretary Asdiar Bachtiar, Karyani was then asked to come up with three types of traditional sports and selected traditional archery, blowgun or tulup, and deduplak or coconut shell.

“We submitted it to the Indonesian National Committee for Community Recreational Sports (KORMI), now we are just waiting for approval, yesterday we asked for five, but maybe the agenda is tight so it is reduced to three,” Karyani said on the sidelines of the Bali Seafarers’ Day archery competition.

Before being presented for the presidency of the G20, Karyani said that the athletes of these three traditional sports will first compete during the National Week of Traditional Sports (Potradnas) in Solo.

In the near future, the athletes will be released to participate in the National Community Recreational Sports Festival (Fornas) in Palembang. Karyani therefore plans to step up preparations after August 2022.

To the media, the General President of Portina Bali explained the reasons for choosing the three traditional sports, including traditional archery which is currently enjoyed by many people.

What is different from traditional Balinese archery, Karyani said, comes from the style of play. Arrow athletes who compete will appear dressed in traditional Balinese clothing and demonstrate their skills from a seated position.

Next, dedulak or walking on coconuts, a sport foreign to sound has not yet been included in the ranks of the types of sports, so it is hoped that it can be contested in the next Fornas.

“Deduplak runs with coconut shells, so the kids run with modified shells. Coincidentally, the activists are our administrators, so we always coordinate with the maestro,” Karyani said.

The third sport chosen was blowpipe or tulup which is also a typical community sport by blowing it using a 2 meter long tool. The three were chosen from 18 other types of sports, to focus on introducing local Balinese wisdom.

On this occasion, Karyani, who has been leading Portina Bali since April 2022, said he was proud and would constantly maintain coordination with KORMI and National Portina in this event.*
