Animal rescuers in Gujarat say thousands of birds fell from the sky during a sweltering heatwave when Indian schools started classes early to escape the midday heat.
Doctors at a veterinary hospital in the city of Ahmedabad were seen feeding dozens of birds, giving them multivitamin tablets, Wednesday (5/11). Some birds have water injected into their mouths because they are dehydrated.
“This year has been one of the worst in recent times. We have seen a 10% increase in the number of birds that need to be rescued,” said Manoj Bhaskar, a relief representative.

According to India’s meteorological department, March was the hottest on record since records began. Meanwhile, northwest and central India have also been experiencing a heat wave since early April.
A number of regions in India have been enveloped in hot temperatures, such as New Delhi which reached 40 degrees Celsius last Thursday and then rose through Sunday.
The government has asked schools to start their activities earlier in the morning to avoid the impact of this heat wave.
“Schedules may be from 7 a.m. The number of school hours per day may be reduced. Sports and other outdoor activities that expose students to direct sunlight may be adjusted accordingly in the morning,” India’s education ministry said.
Not only birds, but vets are also administering IVs to dehydrated cats due to heat waves at the Jivdaya Charitable Trust rehabilitation center in Ahmedabad, India.
