Badminton News: The India Open (Super 750) tournament ended on a very frustrating note for Malaysian badminton fans yesterday.
Men’s doubles duo Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik came close to winning their first ‘open’ title in New Delhi but fell short when it mattered.
The pair took the first set and even took the lead in the decisive game but finally succumbed to the Chinese Liang Wei Keng / Wang Chang (14-21, 21-19, 21-18) in the final disputed in New Delhi .
Reaching the final is still a feat for Aaron/Wooi Yik who were eliminated in the second round of the Petronas Malaysia Open two weeks ago.
They beat Indonesia’s world No. 1 duo Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto in the semi-finals, ending a three-game winning streak the latter held over Aaron-Wooi Yik entering the match.
Aaron-Wooi Yik are in a strange position where they are already world champions and Olympic bronze medalists but remain untitled on the BWF World Tour.
National men’s doubles coach Tan Bin Shen believes the opening will eventually come as long as they continue to believe in themselves and learn from their mistakes.
“We (Aaron-Wooi Yik) won the first game but let our opponents rise. We are also very close to winning the second set,” Bin Shen told the Daily News yesterday.
“I think this (defeat) is part of the process. We have to learn how to handle situations like this. It is a learning experience. They will play a lot of tournaments this year, so they have to prepare mentally. Situations like this will happen again, so they need to know how to deal with it,” he said.
“They have to be brave, believe in themselves and be ready for new challenges. I think one day that will come.”
Bin Shen added that he was still happy to see Aaron-Wooi Yik bounce back from their early exit at the Malaysia Open.
Women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan / M Thinaah, who were also eliminated early at the Malaysian Open, advanced to the semi-finals of the 2023 Indian Open. They lost to No. 2 Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida (Japan) in the last four.
The badminton players will then depart for Jakarta to compete in the 2023 Indonesia Masters which starts tomorrow at Istora Senayan Jakarta.
