Badminton News: Indonesia’s second seeded men’s singles, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting will not be competing at the 2023 TotalEnergies BWF World Championships next week in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The world number 2 is mourning the loss of his mother, Lucia Sriati, who died on August 9.
PBSI confirmed Anthony Ginting’s absence on their social media account.
Coach Irwansyah said: “He cannot participate in the World Championships because he is still mourning his beloved mum.”
Anthony Ginting is set to face Ukrainian Danylo Bosniuk, who advanced to the second round.
BWF expresses its deepest condolences to Ginting and his family. Stay strong, Anthony Ginting.
In Ginting’s absence, Merah Putih will rely on world number 5 Jonatan Christie and world number 21 Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo at this year’s World Championships.
Jonatan Christie will start the tournament against a Malaysian player, Lee Zii Jia, while Chico will meet an Australian representative, Nathan Tang.
If qualified, Jonatan Christie will face the winner between Canadian Brian Yang and Germany’s Kai Schaefer, while Chico Wardoyo will meet the winner between ninth seed India HS Prannoy and Finland’s Kalle Koljonen in the second round.
The Indonesian badminton team is aiming for two gold medals at the BWF World Championships this year, where the last time Merah Putih won the title was when veteran duo Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan won the 2019 edition .
