It's been three weeks since The Boy and the Heron was released in India, and we now have the box office receipts for the first two weeks of the film.
So how is the success of Studio Ghibli films in Indonesia? Following are the figures obtained by IGN India from sources:
NBCC (net box office collection)
- Week 1: ₹1.50 crore ($180,500)
- Week 2: ₹60 lakh ($72,000)
- Total NBCO for two weeks: ₹2.1 crore ($252,000)
GBOC (gross box office collection)
- Week 1: ₹1.85 crore ($222,500)
- Week 2: ₹72 lakh ($86,600)
- Total GBOC for two weeks: ₹2.59 crore ($311,700)
For context, net box office collections (NBOC) are the remaining collections after deducting taxes from ticket sales. Gross box office collections (GBOC) include taxes. Different states in India also have different tax percentages on cinema tickets.
By comparison, in Japan, The Boy and the Heron grossed 1.8 billion yen ($13.2 million) in its non-commercial opening weekend, reaching 8.98 billion yen (61 million dollars) in March 2024. In the United States, the film had one of the greatest successes. opened internationally, earning $13 million in its opening weekend and grossing $46.8 million. In China, the film did even better, exceeding $95 million at the box office.
The Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning animated film was released in India in Japanese and English dubbed versions (no IMAX release) on May 10, 2024, after months of speculation about its release. Southeast Asian film distributor Encore Films had mentioned in February that the company was working on bringing the film to India. However, reports in April suggested that the film might not come to India. Luckily, a sudden announcement from Warner Bros. India that same month surprised anime fans by confirming the film's release.
In IGN India's 9/10 review of The Boy and the Heron, we called the film a “beautiful, complex and deeply personal exploration of the hardships of life and love through Hayao Miyazaki's masterful narrative”.
In March it was also announced that The Boy and the Heron would be coming to Netflix.
