Badminton News: Independent mixed doubles Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing are getting a big boost ahead of the Malaysia Open next month as they are now ranked 5th in the world.
In this week’s latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings, Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing climb one rung to their career-high rankings.
However, Kian Meng doesn’t want to get too excited even though he earned the highest ranking of his career ahead of Malaysia Open 2023.
Kian Meng/Pei Jing will take on new BAM pair Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei in the first round of the Super 1000 tournament at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil from January 10-15.
“It’s never easy against a young pair, especially from Malaysia. Anything can happen. While we’re excited about our new rankings, the goal remains to do well at the Malaysian Open,” said Kian Meng today.
In last year’s edition, Kian Meng/Pei Jing were knocked out in the first round by Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Lai, losing in a close battle 18-21, 21-19, 18-21.
“I recovered from a groin injury. I hope to have better luck this time,” he added.
Kian Meng/Pei Jing reached two semi-finals this year at India Open 2022 and Swiss Open 2022 and won gold (team championship) and bronze (mixed doubles) at the Games of the Commonwealth of Birmingham 2022 in England.
Another independent pair, Soon Huat-Shevon are the second highest ranked Malaysian pair at world No. 1. 9.
