Taliban accuse Pakistan of opening airspace to US drones

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta taliban On Sunday August 28, 2022, Pakistan accused Pakistan of allowing US drones to use its airspace to access Afghanistan. As reported Reuters, Pakistan has denied this allegation.

The Taliban-led Afghan Defense Minister, Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, said US drones entered Afghan airspace via Pakistan.

“According to reports, drones entered Afghanistan via Pakistan, they used Pakistani airspace. We ask Pakistan not to use your airspace against us,” Yaqoob said.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry did not respond to a request for comment on the allegations. Pakistani authorities, however, deny any involvement or knowledge of the US drone attack.

Previously, the United States carried out a drone strike in Kabul in July that killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

The Taliban are still investigating the airstrike that killed al-Zawahiri. The Taliban said they have so far not found the body of the al-Qaeda leader.

Yaqoob’s comments may heighten tensions when taliban Afghanistan is mediating the talks between the Pakistani government and the Pakistani Taliban militant group. Moreover, Afghanistan is also very dependent on trade with Pakistan in the midst of an economic crisis.
