Badminton News: The recent loss to Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty of India was painful for Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
But today, world number 12 pair Sze Fei/Izzuddin have a chance to erase the bitter memories of their quarter-final defeat of the Thomas Cup final in Bangkok last month.
The Swiss Open champions will face world number 8 Satwiksairaj/Chirag for the eighth time in the second round of today’s men’s doubles and fans can expect a tough match.
His record is of course against Malaysia. Apart from recent defeats, they have also lost to India six times with the only victory recorded at last year’s Danish Open.
Sze Fei and Izzuddin were unaffected by their past records.
“The head-to-head record doesn’t matter to us. It will be a new game when we play them tomorrow (today). We have our fans on our side this time. We will do everything to win,” Izzuddin said.
Sze Fei added: “We will discuss with our coach and come up with a new strategy to beat India.”
Meanwhile, the nation’s #1 duo Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik got sweet revenge by beating Japan’s Akira Koga/Taichi Saito 21-18 and 21-19 in their opening match yesterday.
In their only meeting at the Denmark Open last year, the Japanese duo No. 22 in the world dealt a crushing blow by beating representatives from Malaysia in the second round.
“Playing at home is quite important, because we don’t want to disappoint the fans,” said Wooi Yik.
“We are quite happy with today’s result and now we will focus on our next game.”
Aaron/Wooi Yik will meet Terry Hee/Loh Kean Hean of Singapore today for a place in the quarter-finals. The Malaysian pair are determined to win and qualify for the final and end their title wait at the Open tournament.
“Every time we go to a tournament we want to win it, but so far we have failed. Let’s hope this time we really win,” he said.
“But first we have to beat the pair from Singapore. We won’t underestimate them because they have improved a lot,” added Aaron.
