Badminton News: With just three weeks until the start of the World Championships, defending champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore is seeking a timely boost in the individual championships at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
According to the draw, the world number 9 should have no trouble reaching the quarter-finals where he will most likely face Ng Tze Yong.
A win could pit Loh Kean Yew against the player he beat to win the world title in Huelva, Spain last year, world number 11 Kidambi Srikanth of India in the last four.
If Kean Yew again beats Srikanth, another Indian world number 10, Lakshya Sen could be waiting for him in the final.
A win will give the 25-year-old immense confidence as he has struggled to regain the form that made him world champion and hasn’t won a title since his historic feat.
Loh Kean Yew came close twice at the Indian Open in January and the SEA Games in Hanoi in May, but was upset by Lakshya Sen and rising Thai star Kunlavut Vitidsarn, respectively.
In his last game, the Singaporean was heartbroken after losing 17-21, 14-21 to Indonesian Anthony Sinisuka Ginting in the semi-finals of his home tournament Singapore Open 2022.
Currently, Kean Yew holds the title of the first world champion to compete at the Commonwealth Games, but admits he has faced higher expectations since winning the title.
The Penang-born lad will also be aiming for a medal in the mixed team after helping his side reach the quarter-finals with a hard-fought 4-1 win over England. Kean Yew beat Toby Penty 21-12, 21-12.
Loh Kean Yew said: “Toby and I are good friends off the pitch and know each other very well. He’s a great left winger, he has a very good defense and it’s not easy to kill him in rallies.”
