Jakarta –
Speed the Internet Indonesia is said to be among the lagging countries in the world, even losing to Laos and the Philippines. Minister of Communication and Information Budi Arie Setiadi also acknowledged Indonesia’s slow internet connection.
Budi Arie said that many global institutions are reviewing and evaluating Internet speed in Indonesia, including a report from Ookla which has become a hot topic of discussion recently. According to him, in Indonesia itself the speed is around 22 Mbps, which is relatively low.
“Our average Internet speed is 22 Mbps, and that is low. But that is not all, and we are not discouraged,” he said, gathered after the Japnas National Conference, RA Suites Simatupang, South Jakarta, Wednesday (04/10/2023). ) .
Indonesia’s low internet speed was published in the Speedtest Global Index report. According to the report, Indonesia’s internet speed ranks last in the ASEAN region. According to him, Indonesia itself is a very large country, so this condition is influenced by the large number of areas that have minimal internet coverage.
“Because we are a big country. In the city of Jakarta everything is fine, but there are many areas that are not, including our internet penetration rate which is only 78%,” he explained.
However, he is optimistic that Indonesia will be able to overcome these challenges through recovery measures in the form of incentives provided by the government. One of them concerns incentives for the implementation of 5G communications network technology in the country. In addition, the completion of the construction of base transceiver stations (BTS) in border, outermost and disadvantaged areas (3T) is also accelerated.
“Because speed is important. It must increase!”, he stressed.
For additional information, based on the latest Speedtest Global Index report from July 2023, Indonesia has an internet speed of 24.01 Mbps and ranks 8th out of 10 Southeast Asian countries in terms of Internet speed. Meanwhile, Indonesia is ranked 96th out of 143 countries in the world.
Meanwhile, in the fixed broadband category, Indonesia is ranked 122 out of 182 countries surveyed by Ookla. The average fixed broadband internet speed in Indonesia is 27.11 Mbps. The level of Southeast Asia is also not much different, with Indonesia ahead of only Myanmar and Cambodia.
In response to this, the Ministry of Communication and Information protested the report because it was considered inaccurate. In the report, Indonesia is the country with the slowest internet speed in the world, as well as in the Southeast Asia region.
“I will complain to friends who did the Speedtest. If we compare Indonesia to Cambodia, I will also ask if India and China also have bad numbers? because they use the median average,” he said. declared the director of resource management at the General Directorate. of SDPPI, Ministry of Communication and Information, Denny Setiawan at Selular Business Forum 2023, Jakarta, Monday (02/10/2023).
“It’s not fair, it’s like Persib fighting AC Milan. It has to be apples to apples,” he continued.
Despite this, Denny said, Indonesia’s global internet speed rankings reflect the fact that all parties need to make breakthroughs so that Indonesian connections can be faster in the future.
“We are balancing the balance between policy and objective. Hopefully with this new revised PP, thank God it will be granted, all we have to do is do our homework (implement it) and continue the revised PP,” Denny said.
