Local officials said on Saturday (10/12/2022) that the cyclone had killed at least 4 people.
Cyclone Mandous hit southern India with heavy rains and strong winds hitting several districts.
The cyclonic storm also damaged property and caused power outages in the area.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said the natural disaster of Typhoon Mandus on Friday night (9/12/2022) damaged 185 houses and huts.
Apart from this, the cyclone also uprooted 400 trees in the state capital, Chennai, which is a hub for automakers and tech companies, as CNA reported on Sunday (12/11/2022 ).
In addition, Stalin said that nearly 25,000 people, including disaster relief personnel, were engaged in relief work, and more than 9,000 people were transferred to safety in 201 relief camps.
“We are still assessing the damage,” Stalin said during a visit to several areas affected by Typhoon Mandous.
Earlier, Typhoon Mandous weakened to a severe category as it moved through Sri Lanka, where schools were closed on Friday (8/12/2022) due to high levels of air pollution from the cyclonic storm.
In addition, India’s meteorological department said on Saturday (9/12/2022) that Cyclone Mandous is also expected to gradually weaken to an area of low pressure.
