Shah Rukh Khan praised Southern cinema during his speech at the Locarno Film Festival. The actor was awarded the Pardo Alla Carriera Award during the ceremony. 77th Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland on August 10. It was in the conversation after receiving the award that SRK praised South films and the storytelling techniques they use,
“If you ask me honestly, I was wrong in regionalising Indian cinema. Our country is so vast that we don’t have different dialects across the country, we have languages across the country,” he said, adding, “So there’s Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, there are so many languages. So, you could say, all of these are Indian cinema. For me, the most historically rich region in India, if I may say so, is the South Indian region. They have an incredible story to tell.”
The superstar continued, “Malayalam cinema, Telugu cinema, Tamil cinema, they have some of the biggest superstars in our country and we all know that in India. But recently, with big hits like ‘Jawan’, ‘RRR’, ‘Baahubali’, everyone has started taking notice. But cinematographically and technically, South cinema is fantastic.”
Shah Rukh Khan also spoke about the nature of South films and how he always wanted to be a part of them. He also spoke about 'Jawan', a pan-India film with a predominantly Tamil crew, including director Atlee.
“After working with Mani Ratnam in ‘Dil Se’, I wanted to do a South Indian genre film, and not just get a South Indian director to direct a film. In every region, everyone has a different vision of telling a story, the South has a specific vision, larger than life, powerful, with a lot of music. They like their heroes larger than life. So I really appreciated it; I’ve never done a film like this. I actually took my kids and said, ‘Please see if I look okay,’ because I just clapped and it was like the greatest moment in human history,” Shah Rukh Khan said.
So, was language a barrier while shooting for ‘Jawan’? SRK replied, “Yes, the language was a bit of a problem initially, but then we started moving our hands. I was watching Atlee, who is a wonderful guy. He actually had a baby while we were making the film. Meer, who he named after my father, and it was great. We managed to go through most of the film shaking hands and having a great time over idli dosa and chicken chilli. I honestly think it was one of the first fusions of Hindi and South Indian cinema that transcended all boundaries, did very good business and was very much appreciated across the country. So for me, ‘Jawan’ was a great experience.”
Shah Rukh Khan, during the festival, made a witty remark for anyone who doesn't know, and Google recognizes it. The actor will next be seen in “King” Sujoy Ghosh, with Suhana Khan and Abhishek Bachchan.
