in 2021, Netflix launched the Le Serpent series worn by Tahar Rahim. Inspired by a true story, the plot returns to the bloody journey of serial killer Charles Sobhraj. In the 1970s, under the guise of selling precious stones in Asia, this Frenchman drugged and disappeared tourists to steal them…
Sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of two Americans in Nepal, Charles Sobhraj was released on December 21, 2022, after 19 years in detention. Officially released due to his fragile state of health, the criminal returns to France. The man, nicknamed Snake in the Netflix series, continues to maintain his innocence and plans to file a lawsuit against the state of Nepal. Moreover, his lawyer, Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, disputed the terms of his release, “a president with integrity in the Supreme Court (Nepal), found the verdict itself suspicious (…). So here we are, we always give humanitarian and health reasons to cover up… But Charles Sobhraj is in great shape and we will prepare new procedures against Nepal” he explained to our colleagues in French information.
But that’s not all, as the 78-year-old also seems determined to sue Netflix (and the BBC) over a series dedicated to him, as Charles Sobhraj’s advice would suggest. The latter considers that Snake “lui gives a completely bogus reputation, where there is only 30% truth”before adding that he: “never been convicted of murder, but of poisoning in India”. As for Nepal, “he was charged with murder for which he was not responsible, as he was not in Nepal in 1975” concluded lawyer Charles Sobhraj.
