Badminton News: “The dream title,” said Indian star player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy after he and Chirag Shetty became the first Indian duo to win the French Open World Tour Super 750 title in Paris.
The world number 8 duo clinched their biggest title of all time on Sunday by defeating Chinese Taipei duo Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han in the men’s doubles final at Roland Garros 2022.
“Last night you gave me the biggest win on tour, I’m so happy beyond words and so humbled! To be the first Indian couple in almost 40 years to win the Super 750 title is definitely a dream !” Satwiksairaj wrote on his Instagram page.
“But there is no time for complacency anymore, bigger goals and bigger titles are waiting and waiting for us to achieve them!!”
The Indian pair were dreaming of this season, winning the Indian Open Super 500 crown, Commonwealth Games gold, Thomas Cup gold and a bronze medal at the World Championships.
The French Open is their second World Tour title of the season after the Indian Open.
Vikram Singh and Partho Ganguli had won the Roland-Garros title in 1983 when it was a minor tournament.
“We didn’t know it was that long,” Satwik said after Sunday’s game.
“We feel good, we worked hard for this. It’s a dream tournament.”
The 22-year-old from Amalapuram says Kidambi Srikanth’s victory at the French Open in 2017 inspired him.
“I like the fireworks in the background and I want the same profile picture on my phone. I don’t have a laptop, so maybe I’ll buy it now,” he said. he declares.
The Indian combination will be seen in action this week in the Hylo Open Super 300 tournament which offers a total prize pool of 180,000 USD or around 2.7 billion rupees.
