Badminton News: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s badminton season is over for this year. He and his men’s doubles partner Chirag Shetty have pulled out of the 2022 New Zealand Open and Australian Open which were originally scheduled to be played over the next few weeks.

It was a decision he was forced to make due to injury. He suffered one in 2021 in the knee. He’s nursing a more recent one in his groin, having caught it some time ago while competing in the French Open semi-finals against Choi Sol Gyu and Kim Won Ho.

The Indian pair dominated the match, as Satwiksairaj hit a jump smash. “Immediately I felt a pop, that something was stretching too much,” he recalls.

Satwiksairaj still wins that point, and his partner, the match. Despite the injuries, he and Chirag managed to win the BWF Super 750 Tournament Final and claim their biggest victory on the BWF World Tour.

Satwiksairaj then made the decision to play another tournament the following week, namely the Hylo Open 2022 in Germany.

“The only reason I’ve played this tournament is because we’ve played very few tournaments this season. So I just wanted to see how it goes. I don’t really have any hope. I don’t “I didn’t even have a training session before the tournament. Chirag and I decided that when the injury started to get worse, we wouldn’t force the results,” he said.

Although the Indian duo edged out Taiwanese duo Lu Chen and Olympic champion Lee Yang, they lost hard to Sean Vendy and Ben Lane, the British duo whom they had largely beaten in their previous two matches, including the match. back-to-back at the Commonwealth Games final in August.

The defeat ended a year although she looked much more triumphant. The Indian pair ended their season with an overall win-loss record of 36-9, the best in six years together in international competition. They have won two tournaments on the World Tour, namely the Indian Open and the French Open 2022, historic Thomas Cup gold, CWG men’s doubles gold and the first medal at the World Championships .

“It’s not good to be injured, but overall it’s probably our best season,” Satwik said.

“Usually in the past when we played against our idols, we thought before we played our shots. We would have thought that if we played that move they would reward them with something special. You are therefore respectful and non-aggressive. Now people are doing the same with us. The lower ranked players are a bit cautious with us and the top players also know it’s a 50-50 game every time they play. When we were young, we never thought about winning. We just think we have to play well. But as we get older, we realize there’s a difference between doing well and winning. It’s the difference between a good player and a champion. This year we started earning even more,” Satwik said.

Although they started to go further, they were also consistent. “I think we played 10 tournaments and except for one (Malaysia Open where they forfeited in the second round) we at least reached the quarter-finals in all of them,” Satwik said. .

The knockdown was conceded because Satwiksairaj suffered a pulled muscle in his trunk during the match. As a result, the pair missed their next three competitions in July. They also missed four tournaments before the Malaysian Open. It was largely a consequence of that absence, which prevented the pair from qualifying for the season-ending World Tour Finals.

“We only played 10 tournaments this year. Most of our competitors have played 14 or 15. In fact, if we had just played 2-3 more tournaments and even if we had only played the first or second round of those tournaments, we probably would have qualified ( for the World Tour Final),” Satwiksairaj said.

But Satwiksairaj wants to see the bright side of this desire. “Maybe it’s good that we didn’t qualify,” he said.

“When I played the Hylo Open, I was playing less than 80% of my position if I was in top form. I can feel pain when I jump very high or stretch very well. If I push, I can play at 85%. But that level is only enough if you play small tournaments. If you’re playing against the best players in the world, I know it won’t be enough to be competitive.” he declares.

“Right now, I’m very confident with how Chirag and I played on the pitch during the game. We’re playing without too much tension. We didn’t take any pressure during the game. In the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros (against world number 1 Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi) we were leading 20-16 before they tied the match. In the past I would panic but this time I was completely in control. just having fun. When I’m in that mental zone, we start winning games and we’re in that mental zone a lot more this year,” he said.

“I want to focus more on physical training. I want to perform optimally off the pitch. I can handle off court. Off the pitch, it’s more important. If you are strong and fit enough, you can play. And when I’m at 100%, I really believe that we will win more tournaments,” concluded the world number 7.
