Badminton News: India’s star pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who played a key role in India’s historic Thomas Cup victory, have withdrawn from the Thailand Open Super 500 tournament which started on Tuesday.
Chirag is known to have experienced some disruptions during the tournament and the pair informed the Badminton Association of India on Monday of their decision not to take part in the event this week.
The world number 8 pair have lost just one Thomas Cup game to Chinese Taipei and brought India back into the competition after early setbacks to Malaysia and Denmark in the quarter-finals and semi-finals in Bangkok.
Among the other Indian players, eighth-seeded World Championship silver medalist Kidambi Srikanth, who remains undefeated with six Thomas Cup wins, will face Brice Leverdez, while HS Prannoy, who took victory in the decisive third singles of the round of 16, will meet Daren Liew of Malaysia.
Tokyo B Olympian Sai Praneeth will face Koki Watanabe of Japan, while Sourabh Verma will face Toma Junior Popov of France.
In women’s singles, Olympic doubles medalist PV Sindhu will compete in the qualifying round, while Saina Nehwal will face Korea’s representative Kim Ga Eun.
In the men’s doubles, MR Arjun/Dhruv Kapila and Krishna Prasad Garaga/Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala, and Shyam Prasad/S Sunijith, Manu Attri/B Sumeeth Attri, Ishaan Bhatnagar/Sai Pratheek K, competed.
Palak Arora/Unnati Hooda, Haritha Manazhiyil Harinarayanan/Ashna Roy, and Ashwini Bhat K and Shikha Gautam will all be hard at work in the women’s doubles.
B Sumeeth Reddy/Ashwini Ponnappa and Raju Mohamed Rehan/Jamaludeen Anees Kowsar, Ishaan Bhatnagar/Tanisha Crasto and Venkat Gaurav Prasad/Juhi Dewangan will lead the Indian team in mixed doubles.
