Badminton News: Commonwealth Games champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the men’s doubles final of the Roland-Garros Super 750 badminton tournament with back-to-back wins over South Korean pair Choi Sol Gyu and Kim Won Ho .
The world number 8 Indian pair showed attacking play and also controlled the net well to outsmart the world number 18 Korean combination at 21-18 and 21-14 in the 45-minute semi-final.
The Indian pair, seeded seventh, thus reached the second final of a BWF World Tour event in 2022, having won the India Open Super 500 tournament in January earlier this year.
Satwik/Chirag, who won a bronze medal at the World Championships in August, will face fellow semifinal winners Chinese Taipei pair Sean Vendy and Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han.
Against an opponent they had never faced before, Chirag was relentless on the front court, while Satwik unleashed a powerful back smash as the Indians put on a clinical display at Stade Pierre de Coubertin.
Satwik/Chirag, the 2019 finalist pair, never seemed to struggle as they kept everything from the start to close out the opener with the right smash.
India’s combination continued their aggressive game plan in the second game which showed good exchanges early on. After 3-3, Satwik and Chirag led 7-4.
Korea, however, bounced back to 9-10 after plenty of rallies but Chirag fired a spike to give themselves a two-point lead at the break.
Chirag controlled the front court as he was more alert and produced good shots even as the Korean pair struggled to trail 10-15. Two clean errors from Korea gave the Indian pair a long 18-12 lead to finally lock down Game 2 and claim a ticket to the 2022 French Open final.
