For 70 years before the rule was lifted, athletes in Jammu and Kashmir had few opportunities to prove their mettle by competing in sporting events.

As Jammu and Kashmir prepares to celebrate the third anniversary of the abolition of Section 370, the Union Territory administration proudly claims that the rule has brought about major changes in the sports infrastructure of the Himalayan region.
Over the past three years, the United Ministry of Sports has invested Rs 506.13 crore in 77 infrastructure projects under the Khelo India program in the Himalayas.
Various steps have also been taken to create a world-class sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sports activities take place throughout the year, while infrastructure development continues on a large scale. Widely contested branches include cricket, football, volleyball, kho-kho, kabaddi and water sports.
Last year, 1.7 million young people in Jammu and Kashmir participated in various sports and set a record. The government expects that number to rise to 3.5 million this year.
Jammu and Kashmir’s athletes from 2020 to 2021 have won 72 gold, 90 silver and 145 bronze medals in 14 sports.
With this in mind, the government of Jammu and Kashmir has started to launch its mission of instilling a sports culture among the youth.
The repeal of Section 370 has led the people of Jammu and Kashmir to believe that all the activities interrupted due to the outbreak of the Pakistan-sponsored insurgency in 1989-1990 will be revived and the sheer glory of the Himalayan region will be restored.
