MotoGP News: Luca Marini has undergone surgery for the injury he suffered during the Indian MotoGP. The Mooney VR46 rider returned to Italy immediately after his crash in Saturday’s sprint race.
Luca Marini fractured his collarbone in a collision with teammate Marco Bezzecchi. He fell and hit his shoulder first on the Buddh Circuit track, and will now miss this weekend’s Japanese MotoGP as he recovers from surgery.
“It’s not one of my best periods, but it’s starting,” insisted Marini from his hospital bed.
On his return, which has not been confirmed, Marini will face a double long lap penalty imposed by the stewards for “aggressive contact with another driver at Turn 1 which had a negative impact on his race”. “This is the type of racing accident that can happen if two drivers are fighting for first place,” said Pablo Nieto, manager of the VR46 team. “We are very sorry, also because Luca broke his left collarbone and will have to undergo surgery in Italy in the coming days.” “We wish him all the best and hope to see him on the track as soon as possible to continue fighting with the strongest people at This level.”
Marini wasn’t the only driver to crash at Turn 1 in this race. With Stefan Bradl cutting the back of Augusto Fernandez before bringing down Pol Espargaro. Bradl later explained that Fernandez “shut the door” in his face and that he was unable to avoid contact. However, the FIM Management considered it to be a “racing incident”.
