Badminton News: Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu was upset in the first round after being knocked out of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament as he suffered a straight two-game loss to He Bingjiao of China on Tuesday.
Seventh seed PV Sindhu lost 14-21 18-21 to Bing Jiao in women’s singles.
Sindhu, a former world champion, has won two Super 300 titles, namely the Syed Modi International and the Swiss Open this season.
The defeat at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno is sure to have an impact on Sindhu’s preparations for next month’s Commonwealth Games championship in Birmingham.
Sameer Verma was the only Indian singles player to advance to the next round of the day as he scored easily 21-19 and 21-15, beating Frenchman Thomas Rouxel in 45 minutes.
Next, Verma will face Malaysian sixth seed Lee Zii Jia in the second round.
Women’s doubles duo Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy also advanced to the quarter-finals with an easy victory over Indian-American duo Ishika Jaiswal and Srivedya Gurazada 21-15, 21-8.
Mixed doubles pair Ishaan Bhatnagar/Tanisha Crasto suffered the same fate as Sindhu and Praneeth as they also crashed out in the first round after losing 14-21, 11-21 to a combination of Hong Kong, Chang Tak Ching and NG Wing Yung Hong in just 32 minutes.
It was the end of the run for Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy who lost to Japanese duo TakuroHoki and third-seeded Yugo Kobayashi 8-21 and 1-21 in the men’s doubles segment.
