Badminton News: Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu won’t be competing at the Nationals as he hasn’t fully recovered from his ankle injury, but the shutter ace will feature at the opening ceremony.
PV Sindhu, who is on track to recover after suffering an ankle injury at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, will be in Gujarat for the opening ceremony on September 29 along with other sports stars.
The badminton competition started in Surat on October 2.
“It’s a shame that I’m not taking part in the championship due to injury. If I was fit, I would definitely represent my country (Telangana),” Sindhu said.
“The national championship is a great opportunity for all the athletes and everyone I talk to is delighted. I’m sure the badminton match will be very interesting.”
Winner of a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, PV Sindhu is the flag bearer of Indian badminton.
“It’s important for me to take care of myself and focus on the challenges ahead in 2023 (Asian Games) and 2024 (Paris Olympics),” he explained.
Sindhu’s father, PV Ramana, who is also an international volleyball player, said it was a pity that he could not compete in the National Olympics.
“He really wanted to compete. Unfortunately he couldn’t because the next check with the doctor and an MRI will be the first week of October,” he said.
The injury to his left ankle is described as a stress fracture. The treatment protocol is to provide ankle rest.
“I will be part of his rehabilitation program. As a volleyball player, I know how to make heavy landings. I will pass on my experience to Sindhu once he resumes training,” Ramana said.
Sindhu injured in Birmingham.
“He is injury-free and using conservative treatment to continue playing at the Commonwealth Games. This includes freezing, attachment areas on the advice of his coach, physiotherapists and doctors,” Ramana said.
PV Sindhu was unable to participate in the recent World Championships as he was resting. According to his last consultation with an orthopedist in Hyderabad, he was advised to rest more.
