Badminton News: Indian women’s singles badminton player PV Sindhu has been named the flag bearer for the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games Championship.
PV Sindhu is a two-time Olympic medalist and also won bronze and silver at the Commonwealth Games in the women’s singles individual event. At Gold Coast 2018, Sindhu was part of the mixed Indian team that won gold.
The 27-year-old was named the standard bearer after Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra withdrew from the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a groin injury on Tuesday, following his attempt to win an Olympic medal. silver at the World Championships two days earlier.
“Needless to say I was hurt not being able to defend my title and I missed another opportunity to represent the nation. I am very disappointed to miss the opportunity to be Team India’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony, an honor to be expected in a few days,” Chopra wrote in a social media post.
On another occasion, PV Sindhu is in good shape after winning the Singapore Open two weeks ago.
“I’ve always had great confidence in myself. It was only a matter of time before I could find the winning touch again. I loved doing it at the Singapore Open recently,” Sindhu said after the workout.
“Yes, a win like that (Singapore Open) is important, especially before a big event like the CWG. (It) means a lot to me, a big confidence booster,” said Sindhu, 27.
On waiting for his title, Sindhu said, “So it’s just a matter of time. Sometimes you have to understand that it’s not your day. Have hope and belief that you can come back stronger.”
In light of her recent titles and the fact that her compatriot Saina Nehwal missed the bus to Birmingham, Sindhu’s gold medal hopes are rising.
“Yeah hopefully chasing CWG gold. I’ll do my best,” he added with a big smile
