Badminton News: The 73rd edition of the Dutch Open is underway, with the qualifying rounds already completed. Starting Wednesday, Almere will host the 73rd edition of the Dutch Open until October 16. Today was mostly the qualifying rounds for the 2022 Dutch Open, with players from three of the five matches – men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles – vying for a chance to play in the draw tournament main. Fans should also enjoy a few main draw matches today, as eight of them took place on Wednesday night.
In men’s singles, we now know that Fabian Roth of Germany will play in the main draw tomorrow after winning back-to-back matches over Senne Houthoofd of Belgium and Anirudh Janardhanan of India. Aram Mahmoud of the Netherlands also won both of his matches and qualified for the main draw.
The ladies’ singles main draw was nearly empty. Miranda Wilson of Germany, seeded sixth in the qualifying draw, won two matches and will face Yaelle Hoyaux of France tomorrow. Other German players joined him in the main draw; Ann-Kathrin Spoeri beat Jekaterina Romanova from Latvia and Dounia Pelupessy from Switzerland. He will face Edith Urell of Sweden tomorrow.
As with the European Tour in recent months, the Dutch Open 2022 mixed doubles qualifier was packed with Chinese Taipei players who secured a place in the main draw following today’s victory. However, there are two pairs from the host country who will also have chances in the main draw – Andy Buijk/ Kelly Van Buiten and Fin Achtoven/ Iris Van Leijsen have been promoted to the main draw.
The first half of the mixed doubles first round has been up and down for the host nation so far: as top seeds Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek won the first round against Joshua Magee and Moya Ryan 21 -13 and 21-10 second seeded Netherlands, the pair suffered the losses earlier in the day. . Van der Lecq and Debora Jille’s tie could not overcome Denmark’s Mads Verstergaard and Christine Busch and lost 19-21, 18-21.
