JAKARTA – A number of countries have the opportunity to host a peace summit on the Ukraine conflict, with India being the latest candidate.
The Russo-Ukrainian war has been going on for two and a half years, peace efforts continue with international meetings.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said negotiations were underway with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Switzerland on a second peace summit in a conversation with Indian journalists shared on their social media on Sunday.
President Zelensky also said that he conveyed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi his support for India to host the second peace summit, as Kyiv hopes to host it among the countries of the Southern region.
“But I want to be honest, and this applies not only to India, but to any country that is positive about hosting the second summit. We will not be able to host a peace summit in a country that has not joined the peace summit communiqué,” President Zelensky was quoted as saying by Reuters on August 26.
The Ukrainian president added that he discussed all points of the previous communique and peace summit in his meeting with Prime Minister Modi on Friday.
Ukraine is known for hosting international summits to end the war with Russia. The first meeting was held last June in Switzerland.
For the upcoming second round, President Zelensky and Ukrainian officials stressed that Russia must attend the meeting, after the country was not invited to the previous meeting.
President Vladimir Putin and senior Russian officials have said their country has not ruled out the possibility of holding talks.
However, the latest developments in Ukraine's attack on Russia's Kursk on August 6 have come under scrutiny, with a number of Moscow officials saying that negotiations are impossible given the current situation.
