Even after a decade in power, the 73-year-old leader remains popular among much of the population; its opponents have been weakened by internal power struggles and politically motivated criminal proceedings.
Since April 19, more than 968 million people have been called to vote in the world's most populous country, and the election ended on Saturday. According to official figures, around 642 million voters cast their ballots. Vote counting using special counting computers is scheduled to begin on Tuesday at 8am (local time, 4:30am CEST), and the results are expected to be known the following day.
