A major opponent of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been released from prison on bail. Arvind Kejriwal was greeted by more than a thousand supporters outside Tihar Jail in New Delhi after his release on Friday. “We have to save this country from dictatorship,” said Kejriwal. “I fought it with all my might.”
The head of the capital Delhi government was arrested in March as part of a corruption probe. India's Supreme Court said Kejriwal will now be released until June 1 – the final day of the ongoing six-week general election. He is a key figure in the opposition alliance formed against Modi.
Kejriwal's government has been accused of corruption after liberalizing alcohol sales in 2021 and abandoning the state's lucrative stake in the sector. The regulations were repealed the following year, but a corruption investigation in the issuance of liquor licenses led to the arrest of two of Kejriwal's allies.
The politician denies any wrongdoing. Modi's political opponents and international human rights groups have long complained of a decline in democracy in the country. In the current parliamentary elections, it is almost certain that Modi will be re-elected.
