MUMBAI, KOMPAS.com – Indian police discovered a fake call center desk on Monday (05/01/2023) after discovering employees’ habit of repeatedly ordering dozens of breakfast portions.

Fake call centers are widespread in India, which frequently scam people across the world.

The office found was located in a house along Rajodi Beach, outside India’s financial capital, Mumbai.

AFP news agency reported that dozens of employees were prevented from leaving the building so as not to interact with strangers.

Police then received clues that someone was repeatedly ordering dozens of breakfasts from a nearby restaurant every 4:00 a.m.

“The resort was full of tourists on the weekends and almost deserted the other days. So orders for 50-60 teas and breakfasts every morning for a few days aroused our suspicions and we started monitoring the place in secret,” police officer Suhas Bavche told AFP. .

Police eventually raided the one-story house with 60 cabins on the night of April 11, 2023 and arrested the owner and 47 employees.

They have been charged with impersonation, fraud and forgery under India’s Information Technology Act. Authorities also conducted computer forensic examinations.

So far, investigations have revealed that young employees are trained to answer calls from Australian bank customers, Bavche said.

They allegedly took personal details and security information – including OTP (one-time password) – from victims and forwarded them to officials via email.

“This could be the tip of the iceberg. We are currently investigating international connections for the network,” he added.

“These fake call centers operating from one location for several months are common across the country.”
